Question:

Will a bandana covering the lower half of my face work?

I have a shoei rf-1000 helmet and have a question about helmets in general. Well, even with all the vents open, sometimes it fogs up inside. I've seen some riders wear bandanas around their nose and mouth. Does that help keep it less foggy? Or is that just for looks? Any idea on how I can make it less foggy besides opening up the visor? because i wear contacts and it sucks when something gets in my eye because i have to pull over and try to fix it!

  1. Applying shaving cream to your inside and outside of the shield will eliminate the fog.

Just apply it, then wipe it off a couple minutes later.

This sounds dumb but it does work.

Most helmets come with a breath deflector now but I would assume a bandana will work

Rain-X also makes a product to fix this "fogging".

  2. The bandanna is for bugs! Simply spit on the inside of your visor. Just like a scuba mask!

  3. The shoei rf-1000 has a little vent at the base of the visor to prevent fogging, but if that is not working, then I would suggest investing in an anti-fogging spray that would prevent the fog from building up.

The bandanna is just for looks and it actually get very uncomfortable after a while. I would go with the spray or a slim-line style of sunglasses.

  4. there are fog-free appliques you can put on the inside of your sheild...

I also wear contacts, and I can usually deal with the sheild being up 1 click to eliminate fogging...

  5. You probably saw guy riding a motorcycle on his way to rob a liquor store. lol

  6. The reason I wear a bandana around my nose and mouth is because my face is cold or if it is incredibly dusty. Using it for bugs? I thought that was what my face shield and wind screen were for.

The only time I have problems with fogging is during the rain. I raise my face shield to create a visor, but I wear glasses anyway, so eye protection is not the primary issue at this point. I like that idea about shaving cream, though.

  7. In addition to the vents on the exterior, there's a little-known and little-used feature on Shoeis.  (I have an RF-900, BTW).  On the lower edge of the visor, on the left side, there's a small lever.  If you rotate this lever forward, the mechanism will prevent the shield from closing all the way.  It keeps the shield open a very small amount, enough to get some air in and flowing across the helmet, but not enough to let actual objects (insects, etc.) in.  I don't normally have fogging problems, but I use this setting in the rain.  It won't let water in unless it's really coming down.

    Best of luck!
