  1. Bettas are tropical fish from southeast Asia where the water temps are usually in the 80 degree range.  They live in large bodies of water (rice paddies) that are irrigated and thus have a constant (but slow moving) flow of water through their habitat.  They need a heater and a filter just like any other tropical fish.  Ghost Shrimp Fan is the only one answering betta questions here that seems to have some knowledge of the fish.  Keep it up, GSF.

Just the fact that they "can" live in deplorable conditions, doesn't mean that you should force them to.  Just barely existing is not living.  Just imagine keeping a dog or a cat in a closet and not allowing it out to move around.

A betta (pronounced bet-tah, not bay-tah) should be kept in at least a 5g tank and a 10 is better all the way around.

People brag about their bettas living 2 years....  It must have been 2 years of pure torture for that fish.  In the wild they live up to 5 years and in a controlled lab setting they can live 7-8 years.  The longest I have heard of is 10 years old.  This is with a filter, heater and good high protein food.  Bettas are carnivores and need high protein in their food.

Pellet foods are not good for them, IMHO, because I believe they can cause intestinal blockages if too many are eaten.  They get to the intestines before absorbing moisture to soften them up and block the movement of waste through the fish's system.  If you must feed pellets, soak them in a cup of tank water before giving to the fish.

  2. Ya that is true. They have lungs so they breathe our air. They will come to the top and breathe about every five minutes. No heater is fine too. It will do just fine in that.

  3. it will be fine without either of those things. they are one of the few fish that dont require them and are usually sold in kits. Although they are more comfortable in higher temperatures.

Read the environment specifics in the article under source and you may have a better understanding

  4. Yes your betta will survive in a 1 gallon tank with no heater or filter.  In the winter you may want to keep them in a comfortable feeling room though.

  5. It will survive, yes, but it will not be comfortable. It will be chilled and cramped and you will have to do a lot more water changes to keep the water clean.  A betta is a tropical fish that is most comfortable in water temperatures of 76-80 degrees F.  Unless the room you keep the tank in is at that temperature, your betta will be cold, which means it will be listless and inactive.  Many people with bettas without heaters often complain that they are "boring fish" and that they "don't move much".  This is because they are so cold.  Bettas kept in larger tanks with heaters are not just beautiful, but active, interesting fish.  Like any other fish, bettas must live in the same water they pee and poo in and deserve a filter.  Since they aren't strong swimmers and don't like a current in their water, they should have a filter without a strong current like a sponge filter or an undergravel filter, but they deserve a filter nonetheless.  They are hardy little fish and can survive without these comforts, but that doesn't mean they should have to.

  7. yes they can comfortably live without filter such as u can live without ac or fan in a room
