  1. All that the reserve switch does is feed gas to the engine from a lower part of the tank than it regularly does, so it would function the same. You shouldn't do that though, because if you do run out of gas instead of having like 60 miles in the reserve, your pretty much boned.

  2. Your tank saddles the frame support.  When fuel gets low, you feed only from one side of the saddle.  When it is empty, switch to reserve, and you feed from the other side.

Running from reserve at first will have no real difference.  You will run that side dry, but the normal side will still have gas, and becomes the reserve.  Switch the petcock to normal, and you will get that gas.  The main reason for calling one side "reserve" is so you will know without having to remember which side you were running off of.

    Good luck.

  3. you'll use your reserve and then when you run out of gas you will have no reserve so you will actually be out of gas.

  4. It will not affect performance. It will not do any damage.

Provided everything else is in good order.

    Check your other question.

If a vacuum hose is loose from the petcock, it WILL affect performance and MAY cause damage. Your engine running hotter on one side indicates a lean condition on that side. Petcock operating vacuum is only supplied from one carburetor, not all of them.

P.S. Make and model of bike are very helpful.

  5. Yep. But then you lose the warning that you are low on fuel.

  6. sure it will til you run out of gas and have to push it, it will do nothing in how it runs

  7. Yes.

  8. yes but it will run out of gas with no reserve. the valve on the bottom of the tank has two openings. one is higher in the tank then the other. when it is open ,you are in the normal"run' position. when the level of fuel drops below that opening you can go on 'reserve' which has a lower opening and can get fuel from lower in the tank.you can pick up more sediment from the bottom of the tank, but that is about the worst that will happen.

  9. HI, Dewire

Yes, you may operate a bike in reserve position, and the onlydamage will be to your feet, as you may have to push your bike because you bypass the warning of the reserve function.
