Question:

Will a blue-tailed skink grow it's tail back after dropping it?

today at work there was a skink in the building (the second one in as many weeks). i caught the the first skink we had inside with little difficulty and placed him (or her) outside. this time i managed to catch the skink, but my hold wasn't good, and when it bit me, i dropped it. i knew the bite was harmless and it didn't even puncture the skin, it just shocked me. when i dropped it, i reached to catch it again and it dropped it's tail. i realize now that i should have given it a minute to calm down before i grabbed for it again, but it's all over now and i can't go back. i did manage to catch it and place it in the field next to the building (i carried it with it biting my finger for all it was worth, the poor thing). i just feel awful about making it lose it's tail, and would like to know if it will grow a new one, or, if not, can it survive with the last 3 inches of tail gone?

  1. yes the skink can live with out its tail and i have a iguana and blue tounged skink both lost there tail and yes it will grow back but if adult size maybe not

  2. Yes, they can grow new tails. I believe that some lizards can drop their tails on purpose.

The below is from another Yahoo! Answers user.

"In species like Broad-headed Skinks, the tail is brightly colored (blue in this case) and is frequently twitched by the lizard so that predators see and attack the tail but not the body. Lizards that lose their tails in this way can grow them back but the replacement tail is never as long as nor as colorful as the original one. Replacement tails grow back in as little as three months or as long as two years."

  3. it should grow back. thats what happens to most lizards
