Question:

Will a dent in my driver affect its performance?

My friend banked a ball off the heel of my new driver. The club is a new Jack Nicklaus 1 wood. Titanium I think. The dent is about the size of my thumb located about a 1/4 inch under where the shaft connects to the club head. I hit it several times after the 'accident' and there did not seem to be an distinguishable differences in its performance. My shots were actually straighter. Is there any information available out there on dents on club heads?

  1. If it affects your confidence it will affect your shot. If not it will be fine. Its all about confidence with this game.

  2. Cosmetics usually do not affect playability. If you hit it the same as always don't worry about what it looks like.

  3. Yes it will have an effect.  If the dent is on the face it will greatly affect the ball flight and negatively affect the clubs performance.

If the dent is not on the face but on the heel it should have little effect on the performance.  The dent could make the club illegal for tournament play.

  4. No not to badly, just depends on where the dent has occured. If it was on the hitting surface then you might want to have a pro look at it to see if it will. If it's on hte back side of the club then no..

  5. Your club is shot, but if you like it better, more power to you!

  6. It shouldn't affect your club really at all but it all depends on how deep and the size of the dent in your club.

  7. If the dent is not too deep you are probably alright, but modern clubs are designed to give in the middle of the face (sweetspot) and then spring forward launching the ball with increased speed.  I had a club where the face actually caved in - but the manufacturer was happy to replace the head for me no charge.  I would suggest you have a shop at least look at it.  If your dent is at the edge of the spring-face part it could effect your shots or possibly break there along a stress line.

  8. Nope... I have the same dent on the heel.... it's still performing as usual...
