Question:

Will a digital audio optical to coaxial converter produce better sound than my current setup?

I have a PS3 as my Bluray player and it only has HDMI and digital audio Optical outputs. My Bose surround sound reciever only has a digital audio coaxial input. Currently, I have the HDMI out of the PS3 plugged into the TV, and then a coaxial out from the TV to the receiever on the sound system, and it sounds ok, but not dolby digital quality. I wanted to know if i would achieve significantly better sound by buying an optical to coaxial converter on amazon or ebay to go straight from the ps3 to the receiver, or if this is, in essence, what i'm already doing thru the tv.

thanks alot.

  1. The answer is maybe.

If your TV converts it to an analog signal and then back to digital before it sends it out, then yes.  Check you TV specs or email the company.

If your TV does not process the sound and only passes it through, then no.  The signal would be unmodified and you will get the same quality as using the converter.

  2. Run the audio to the receiver.
