Can I buy this for a convict cichlid. (Four inch female.) Or is it too small? Check out the other one too please? Is the other one big enough also?

  1. Hard to tell from the photo, but I think they look too small.  If anything, I'd say the first looks better though, more room inside.  And, she'd probably dig  out the substrat inside it as well for more room.

  2. Be sure you don't clutter your tank, or put in something that would take away too much swimming space.

I wouldn't buy decorative objects simply because the fish don't appreciate them even though they are pleasing to you.

You can make nice looking caves with medium size, sterilized river rock, pieces of slate, terracotta pots, and even PVC pipe.  Glue pieces together with aquarium sealant and you're all set.

Very unlikely it'll get stuck in any of those, though.

  3. I used to own some convicts and I would make their caves with my own rocks. Buy some rocks at the local pet store and form a decent sized cave for him. They prefer real rocks to that little fake one. He may be cramped in there and might even reject it altogether.

One more thing, I would always boil the rocks before putting them in the tank to make sure they are clean.

  4. I think it would fit into both. And also, i think that the fish are smart enough to find out that they cant fit into the cave. i dont think they would get stuck.

  5. Has as been said save yourself the cash and look around for natural rock and use that, if your worried about it collapsing a little bit of silicon will stick it together, having found some rock check there's no metal veins running through it and place it in a bucket for 24hrs to see if any discolouration of water occurs if not its probably inert, slate is the most commonly used as the flat surfaces work better for placement

  6. I don't think she could would get stuck in any of them, and they would be a nice decoration. Although, after what happened with my betta I don't want to take any chances with my fish... I had this male betta who lived in a 5 gallon aquarium and in the aquarium I had a little castle with a hole in the middle like a gate and two holes in the top, one on each side,  and one day I came home and he had tried to swim into the castle... from the top right hole, he got stuck and he died.

  7. There will be no issue with either of those caves.

I used to have both in one of my aquariums, the first one you have pictured was occupied by 3 or 4 Cichlids, and my 8" black shark didn't mind sharing the second one with the algae eater and 3 rather large Loaches.

If you're really that worried about it though the second one has more space inside than the first, and larger entry/exit holes.

  8. terra cotta pot..

50 cents at the hardware store

  9. I don't know about the 1st one but the second one it can for sure fit in. Goodluck!!!
