Will a french cell phone work in italy?

I bought a Sagem cell phone in France and multiple people told me it works in all of Europe. I'm studying abroad in Italy next semester so it would be nice if i didn't have to buy another phone. The website (Bouygues, the cell phone network) says nothing other than it working in all of France... were numerous people confused or lying to me or something?

will it work if I buy an Italian telecarte/phone card and load in on my phone? do I need a new SIM card or something? does Bouygues still work in Italy? If it does, can I recharge it/buy minutes online in America using an American credit card?

Basically.. I have a french cell phone with a French phone network - what do I do in italy?

  1. Most likely the phone will work in Italy, but if you use your French contract (prepaid most likely,) you will pay a lot.

Often you get a phone which is bound to one company only, you can get it unlocked by the company but most companies only do it when you have had it for a longer period, one year or two years are rather standard.

You can also get it unlocked at one of the many places offering to do so, but how much that costs, and how successful it is depends on the make and age of the phone.

Often it is cheaper to get a new phone in a special offer, but you can be lucky and already have an unlocked phone, some companies do not lock them.

So take it to a phone store and ask them to check it for you and buy a sim only contract or prepaid sim.
