Will a full or empty metal cans support greater weight?

For example, will a full can of paint suport more weight than an empty can?

  1. this is a logican answer. The full cans have more mass therefore can support graeter weight on them  


  2. To get technical about it, a "full" can actually means an air-tight can.  Mass has nothing to do with it; it is a matter of structure.  A sealed, air-tight can (regardless of amount of liquid inside) will support more weight because the fluid inside (air or liquid) is mostly incompressible.

    Example:  Try standing on an empty soda can and compare that to standing on a full soda can.  If you weigh more than about 120lbs then the empty soda can should easily collapse under your weight.  The full soda can will support much more weight.
