I am trying to get wireless connection from a laptop from a wireless router. The laptop has a built in wireless card, i guess it is called LAN, but it does not seem to work it has an "X" on the status saying "the saved settings on the computer do not match the required settings on this network."

  1. This is why there are standards.  If the router and the wireless card are built to the same standard they are interoperable.  The wireless standards are the 802.11 a / b / g and the proposed but not yet officially set is the 802.11 n.  If your devices are 802.11 a / b / g compatible they are interoperable and will work.

Having said that, it does not mean that these devices communicate right out of the box.  You must configure them so that they are secure.

Carefully document the wireless config of the router, including the security, encryption, preshare key, and MAC address validation.  You must match the security, encryption, and preshare key on both devices; you must load the MAC address of the wireless card on the router.  This assures security which you need to have.

I suspect your problem is one of configuration, not of equipment capability.

  2. It's telling you that the SSID, security protocols, etc. on the laptop and router don't match up.  All of them need to be the same.
