Part of my previous question wasn't answered.

Will a mother protect her daughters from other rats once they are introduced into the larger cage? The babies are 4 weeks old, but they are still nursing if that makes a difference. The mom has always been very protective of her babies (it probably doesn't help that I adopted her 6 days before she gave birth.) and so I am worried she may get aggressive towards other rats if her daughters are with her. Would it be better to separate them for a week (Daughters in one half the cage, mom in the top since I can split it.) and then introduce them all back together?

  1. The mother rat will be very protective of her babies, but then again so will any rats which are close to others, so if you had two males that had been together for x amount of time, they would be nervous of other rats, too.

I'd keep them apart until you can seperate mum and babies, or else there will be problems.

She will attack other rats if her babies are with her and may attack other rats which are unknown to her, even without babies. Female rats generally are okay to put together, but sometimes they may fight with strangers too.

But she will attack any strange rats if she feels her babies are at risk; I'd be concerned that she would feel at risk and the babies were at risk if she could still see them and smell them but not actually be with them.
