  1. Do you mean "wean"?

The mother horse will eventually wean the baby, but she'll do it on her own time schedule.  Most folks wean it for her, so she'll have enough energy for the next baby.  Broodmares are usually bred back within a month of delivery, so feeding this year's baby while carrying next year's is a heavy burden.

  2. Nope not always !!

and if taken away to early ,Just like dogs problems will come up later. I have had 5 horses that where weaned too early they all had the same trust issues

    ,, Others not ?

I know that if working with the Mom the baby will watch you and Mom talks to the baby also ( she 'll say its O,K, do that  for her,,   she wont hurt you !!

and when tieing up the foals,, learns just like mom ,She will watch you pick up the mares feet  etc and Mom will tell her this is O.K. )

I believe that 6-8 months is the right time

Unless the mare says different !!( some mares are not natural Moms . then you better take care of the foal

I have seen a few reject them at birth and even later so be carefull )

I trust mother nature more, then I do humans making decisions for them  .... then people making them for them

They learn so much from Mom

and need to be with her as long as possible,, & in a big place

meaning they must have room to romp and play when ever they want to
