Question:

Will a .mov file play on a standard DVD player?

I have a digital camera that takes video and saves it to a .mov format. I do not have a movie editing program that will work with .mov and don't know how to convert the file.

Do you know if .mov will work on a DVD player? Or what program will convert .mov to something more workable?

I am working on a PC (using Vista), not a Mac, btw, so QuickTime Movie Editor is out (it only edits on Mac). I also own the entire Adobe Creative suite, but have not yet taken the course to teach me how to use the program.

  2. You need convert to dvd.

Cucusoft Video to DVD Creator is a good choice. It converts popular video formats such as AVI, MPEG, WMV, DivX, DV, VOB to DVD and burn DVD movie played on portable or home DVD player. Any video to to VCD/DVD/SVCD is even faster than real-time.

Unbiased reviews and side-by-side comparisons of the DVD creator give you enough information to research the ins and outs of a particular product:

  3. It depends on the brand of DVD player, Apex DVD player are known to work with anything (at least common filetypes)

When you buy a DVD or make a DVD Video using a DVD Video burning program, the files are saved as the following

    DVD Disc root

    -Video_TS

    --Video_TS.IFO

    --Video_TS.BUP

    --Video_TS.VOB

    --VTS_01_0.IFO and so on

So simply burning a .MOV file to a blank DVD won't just make a DVD Video, you will need a DVD Video burning program that will convert the .MOV file to all the files in a Video_TS folder

Many programs will do this, but I prefer Nero, it has done the best converting out of all the programs I have tried, it is not free, (though in most cases come bundled free with a DVD burner), but it shouldn't be that expensive, and you can buy it at your local computer store

  5. The .mov file won't play on a standard DVD player. What you need is DVD authoring software, which will convert the .mov file to the format the DVD player needs. Unfortunately, I'm a Mac guy, so I don't know what software you'd use on Windows.

Maybe Windows Movie Maker? It's included with some versions of windows, or you can download it from Microsoft:
