Will a small puffer fish live okay alongside my tropical fish tank community?

I am about to buy a fish tank and make it into a communiy tank with angelfsh, I have seen a smallpufferfis in my pet shop and wondering if it wld live okay with the community?

  1. no. a dwarf puffer, despite it's tiny size, would shred an angelfish to pieces.

    dwarf puffers (the only small puffer commonly seen which is true freshwater, green spotted puffers and figure eight puffers are brackish) are best only in species tanks. they do not play well with others, and indeed two male dwarf puffers can fight to the death over territory! the only fish that has ever been kept successfully really with dwarf puffers is the otocinclus due to their inactiveness and docileness, they keep themselves to themselves.


  2. it depends on the kind of pufferfish. but do your research on the puffer. some require brackish water or they will die shortly. they are all pretty aggressive fish. if you get one make sure you keep them with fast moving fish. i have a green spotted puffer and a red scat in my 29 gal tank and they are pretty good together. they sometimes get a little testy with each other over food but.....good luck

  3. no puffer fish need to live only with their own species as they nip, kill and eat other community fish.
