Will a splinter dissolve?

Question

If I have a splinter stuck in the calve part of my leg, will it dissolve on its own?

As a child, I had a wood splinter deep in my finger that I couldn't remove.  After a few weeks, when enough layers of skin had been shed, what was a big would splinter was now just dark puss.  Hence, my take is that wood can dissolve.  But of course, watch out for infection.
