Will a stain blocking primer help me?

filling in holes and cracks in my room and decided to completely cover a large crack, which i then noticed a water stain coming through like an inch of patching plaster, will sherwin williams stain blocking primer cover the water stain and keep it covered, or is there something else i should do?

  1. Wash it down with TSP before hand and then prime it and paint it. It should cover it as long as there is no more water seepage.


  2. Use Kiltz Stain blocker but first you need to find out why there is a water stain there in the first place and fix that issue first.

  3. I used oil based kilz primer.  it is the only primer that worked.  i tried sherwin williams, and kilz latex primer that did not cover all that well.  definitely the old based kilz...

  4. The real issue will be where the water is coming from.  You could paint it over with regular paint or a primer, but if the wall behind is still damp even on an occasional basis no paint is going to take care of that.  Also you should know that the stain blocking primers are loaded with VOCs and that might be a serious threat to your health.
