  1. No - they do not contact the round. See the link for pix.

  2. A high quality suppressor will not touch the bullet so, no.

Some older suppressors (non 03 manufacturer)  which were drilled vents in the barrel. The did mess things up by slightly distorting the rifling or leaving a tiny bur. These were often the homemade jobbers (illegal) usually crude and only intended to be used a couple of times and discarded.

  3. no, the bullet does not contact the suppressor. lengths vary depending on manufacturer and degree of suppression, as well as technology available to the manufacturer. You can Google Suppressors, you can pick up a copy of "shotgun news" at barnes and noble or other book stores and look thru the ads, or you can contact a licensed dealer near you. You will also have to install a longer barrel that is threaded to accept the suppressor. Once you decide which one you want, you need to jump thru a few hoops (but not bad) fill out a BATFE form 4 and pay the $200.00 tax stamp fee. That is, if you live in a state that allows them.

The suppressor is usually mass produced to fit certain models, and does not require your pistol to be fitted to, although as I said, you have to change out the barrel.

  4. No, the bullet never touches the suppressor so it cannot change the marks made by the bore of the gun.

  5. YES, some suppressors have "wipes" that the bullet passes through. This effectively slows down the expanding gasses until the hole in the wipes through which the bullet passes becomes too large. Then the wipes need to be replaced. This will also leave tell-tale marks on the bullet from this type of silencer.

  6. Suppressors and silencers do not usually make contact with the bullet. So the answer to your main question is no.

  7. Paula, a suppressor goes outside the barrel of a gun so the gun's striations are not affected.  If you are in the USA there a number of issues you must deal with before legally obtaining a suppressed firearm.  You need to live a State that allows private ownership of suppressors.  You must find a dealer that sells suppressors and if your 1911's barrel is not slightly extended and threaded for a suppressor you must get that done.  And you have to pass a background check to the satisfaction of BTAF (bureau of tobacco, alcohol & firearms). There is also another kind of fee that comes to a couple of hundred dollars besides the cost of the suppressor.  What your final cost will be I have no idea.  I find it simply is too much trouble.  If a gun is too loud then use hearing protection easily available from any sporting goods store.  If you have another reason for wanting a suppressor then be adviced: You may be disappointed.  Suppressors do not silence guns, they merely make them not as loud.  I've only ever fired a Beretta 92 9mm that was suppressed and I was really disappointed.  We even used subsonic ammo but it still sounded like a gun shot to me.
