I have a little 87 mazda rx7, it has a ho 305, basically a stock engine, no radical cam or anything.. I have an aluminum racing radiator and electric fan setup. other small block vehicles I have have 10-15 psi caps.. This racing radiator has a 22-24 psi cap.. It seems like the car is building heat, could this hi psi cap be the cause? basically was does the psi of a cap mean?

  1. No. It just lets the coolant get a little hotter before it vents.

Aluminum racing radiators are junk. They're just to save a little weight, but only work well at high air fllows, are unreliable and don't transfer heat as well under normal conditions.

  2. no but if it needs to overheat the cap wont come off in time and maybe cook your engine

it also acts as the radiator systems pressure regulator so I'm not sure if it will work

  3. Well, it wont be the CAUSE of it overheating, but it will not allow the propper pressure to realese at the right time. It is going to be overheating when the cap actually releases pressure.

The cap acts as a pressure regulator.

I would have the cap changed.
