1. Quite possibly.. .it all depends on what you're taking. And comes down to the way your body reacts to it. I take Lithium and Epilim (and have trialled so many other medicines this year for bipolar) and I've put on weight but thats also in conjunction with my appetite being messed up and too tired to exercise.

With the medicines you get, there should be a little leaflet inside telling you of possible side effects. If youare concerned, speak with your doctor... i used to take an anti-psychotic, Risperdal or Zyprexa and they cause weight gain. Idont know why. My only guess is that they slow your system down and increase your appetite... found myself eating all sorta c**p at 3am!

You have the right to know information about the drug and side effects of what you are taking, so speak to the doc or visit the pharmaceutical company's website (the name of the company is usually on the box).

If you're in Australia you can request a CMI leaflet on the drug when you pick up your prescription!

    Good luck. :)

  2. In order to answer that question you would need to do some research on the medications that you are taking. If you do not wish to gain weight, let your doctor know as it may be a side-effect of the medication. Just talk it over with them and they will be able to help you.

  3. It depends greatly on the specific drug and I suggest that you talk to a doctor, a pharmacist and do web searches in order to get specific information.

Lithium is know to contribute to significant weight gain in the early stages of treatment but then things settle down after awhile. This is due to fluid retention and increased appetite. But you need to weigh up the need for this drug (all drugs) as the benefits can be huge and outweigh the drawback of weight gain. If you need lithium then plan to increase your exercise abit (it's good for your mental health anyway).

There are similar drugs though that have less or no weight effects.
