Will jet pilots ever extinct ?? Technology gets more and more advanced every day, in like a 100 years, will pilots extinct ?? will there be planes flying without any pilots and the computer do everything ?? Thank you.

  1. Probably not for a long long long time. Who will trust only computers? It could be that only 1 pilot is necessary just to ensure if the system crashes the plane does not! Plus what airline could possibly afford to go completely automated. The only way I see pilots become extinct is with the invention of teleportation.

  2. Who knows for sure. Even the simple light rail trains and subways still have an operator at the controls. And given the nature of some of the stuff transported by freight train, they are required to have engineers. If, at some point, the technology is sound enough and trustworthy enough that freight trains are allowed to pass through cities and towns with no operator on board, you will see pilotless passenger airplanes a few decades after that.

Additionally, the level of security needed to prevent hackers from playing with the software and air traffic control systems if you ever get to that point, may render that method of control too expensive.

Lastly, at this point there is no substitue for having human eyes to make judgements about weather that is too severe. There have been many times I have been staring at a major thunderstorm and yet see nothing painting on the radar. A computer programmed airplane may just fly right through that. A small UAV flying through a thunderstorm and crashing may not get noticed, a passenger airplane doing the same thing would be a huge story.

  3. I think the question should be: Will Airlone pilots ever BE extinct?

No, the typical job a pilot does now may change. The pilot is not only flying the aircraft from many years of training and learning the skills needed to do it. He is also a manager to the crew, responsable for the over all safety of the flight and plans everything.  So even if computers start to completely take over flying (look up the G1000 by the way) you will still need someone to make desicions.

  4. unfortunately technology will make us all obsolete. No matter from hamburger flipper to fighter jock we will all be replaced it is the capitalist way. they go with whatever is cheaper to operate. the machine will always be cheaper as it doesn't require days off or wages. It doesn't need breaks and doesn't have those little failings like drunk or stoned on duty.

  5. Yes and then there will be far fewer accidents. Cheaper tickets too.

  6. There are aircraft flying today without pilots on board. Not with passengers and they are controlled by a pilot on the ground. So to answer your question No, pilots will not become extinct, some person will have to control it either on board or on the ground. Computers would have to think for themselves and then they would take over the world! OMG!

  7. yes in the future they will be like the dodo bird.

  8. There are some things that computers on a plane just can't do and one of them being judging weather and emergency situations.  No matter how advanced human intuitivness is needed on every flight for reasons that can't always be predicted by program engineers.  Contrary to popular believe pilots do more than just push buttons and sit in a chair but make decisions and manage sophisticated flight systems.

  9. I HATE technology!!!!!!! I'm not amish or anything but I can't stand the thought of stupid computers taking over every job! I want to be an airline pilot but I doubt I will be. I will be more of an "observer". Flight today are mainly auto pilot. The pilots do taxi, takeoff, and some landings(depending on weather, fatigue, etc.). Planes will fly themselves and there will be no more need for pilots.

  10. Unmanned  jets have been flying since the 1940s.  --Remember the reconnaisance planes sometimes being shot down over China during the 1960s?

Computer programmers aren't usually pilots, and never foresee every need.  And someone should be there to fly an airliner when the computers are disabled, sabotaged, or are otherwise unable.

  11. Well, both FedEx and UPS are looking hard at UAV technology.  They both fully believe that within 20 years or so, many of their domestic routes will be flown by UAVs.

AFA passenger aircraft, I think for psychological reasons if for no other, that at least one crew member will have to be on board.  That crewdog may not be "flying" the plane fulltime, but will be a systems manager, and be there in case of emergency.

Then again, with concerns over pollution, and consumption of fossil fuels, magnetic-rail high speed trains may  take over many domestic passenger routes....

  12. yes thats gonna happen but i think airlines cannot let an airplane fly without some one in the cockpit to take care of every thing and in case something goes wrong ,, also as passengers know that there is nO ONE IN THE COCKPIT ,, i think they will refuse getting on the airplane !!

    thats all ;)

  13. Well, consider how at the dawn of trains how complex it was to handle a train. Nowadays, there are many monorail/commuter trains that are fully automated without any sort of engineer. In the distant future it is likely that air travel will be so automated and ritualistic that they will not require pilots at all. Of course, by this time, pilots will likely be needed to control spaceships and giant star cruisers. So the actual "pilot" as in someone who controls a vehicle with large payloads, will never really be extinct. I don't see this happening within the next 100 years... until we have a way to garuntee survival in the event of a complete computer/electrical shutdown, someone skilled will always be needed in the event of an emergency.
