Will an abortion affect my chances of getting into the air force?

I've recently had an abortion and want to know if the air force will look down on me for having one and not let me in. I'm just looking for a straight forward answer and not a d**n lecture on what I did, thank you.

  1. No-- and you are not obligated to tell them you've had one.

  2. as a surgical procedure, there is a wait limit before you can enlist.. no more than 12 months, and probably much shorter than that.

as long as there were no other complications, or the reason for having it wasn't medically related, it should not be an issue.

and yes she MUST disclose the fact..it is a medical procedure and ALL  such  issues MUST BE DISCLOSED.

  3. Thank goodness there were some normal answers at the end of this thread.

No the Air Force will not "Hold it against you"

Yes you do have to disclose it because it is a surgical procedure

Yes there is a minimum wait time after the procedure and you do need a letter from the doctor, not just because it's an aboriton, heck getting a wart or your tonsils removed requires a wait time and a letter. The only surgeries that don't require letters are apendix surgeries more than a year old and wisdom teeth.  Just do things by the book and you'll be fine. Good Luck.

And for the folks who said, "how will they know?" Here's how. One of my flightmates had a girl get pregnant while she was in the DEP. She got an abortion and didn't tell her recruiter. When they gave her the pregnancy test on ship day she came back as pregnant. Apparently, whatever is in the woman's system that gives a positive pregnancy test doesn't completely leave her system for a few months after the abortion.

  4. First, all the answers on here except for one are correct:

Yes there is a wait time, I believe it is 90 days from the time you had it and you must have a letter from the doctor stating everything is back to normal...ie your periods.

Second, you must disclose this when answering the medical questions portion of your talks with the recruiters.  If you decide not to that is constituted as lying and thus could end up being a false enlistment.

An abortion will not be held against you.  Remember to be absolutely honest with the recruiter when he/she asks all the questions

  5. Pray to God for forgiveness!  YOU just terminated a life! YOU had other options!

  6. Are you kidding me? Do you know how many people in the military get abortions? They won't care.

  7. Why would you tell them?

It's not information I would volunteer.

They aren't going to search through your medical records.

  8. No

BTW  - you don't need to tell them!

    Peace

  9. Naw, if you get pregnat before you leave for training or get pregnant when you are deployed. that will p**s them off, or get pregnant so you won;t get deployed, I currently know an officer and since the war started, she has had a baby every year or so and I am starting to wonder if she is trying to keep herslef here int he states so she won;t get deployed.

  10. I doubt it. Why would they?  Its none of their business.

  11. You won't get into heaven, not sure about the air force. I don't think they woudl have any moral objections, I'm not sure about the medical end of the whole thing but if there's any activities your not supposed to do for 6 months after or something like that that may affect you getting in.

  12. Should be fine, but the officers who look at your file are probably going to want to party with you.

  13. no they won't look down on you if you had an abortion...i don't even think they would know about it unless you disclose it to them and i believe unless it's medically relevant to your job in the military (which i highly doubt) you don't need to disclose it to them.  It's like having your appendix taking out...what do they care if you got your appendix taken out.   Abortion is legal so the military can't look down on you if you had one besides it's highly doubtful if there is no females that are in the military that didn't have an abortion while they were in the military.

  14. How will they know?

  15. There is a wait time (I believe its 90 days)... It will only effect you if it has caused you some sort of medical issue or was due to a medical issue. You DO need to put it on your enlistment papers and you will need the paperwork from the clinic. It can potentially bar you from certain MOS's in the mental health fields, but as long as you have no lasting physical or mental issues due to it then you'll be fine.

  16. No. I was in the AF and they will not hold that against you.
