Question:

Will an i.Link cable work with my camcorder?

OK, I got a Sony Handycam DCR-HC48 for Christmas, and it came with an installation CD, allowing me to upload pictures from my camcorder (via Memory Stick) to my computer. It also installed a program which allows me to stream and upload video from my camcorder to my computer. The software would let me upload pictures, but not videos. I recently learned that a USB cord (which I've been using the whole time) only allows the transferring of pictures, not video, and that I will need an i.Link cord in order to upload video. So my question is this: if I buy an i.Link cord, will it fit in my computer tower? Are there different kinds of i.Link cords? Do I have to buy additional acessories in order for this to work? Please help!

I THINK my computer may be a Gateway Model E4000, but I'm not entirely sure. I saw pictures of E4000's online and they look similar to mine...

  1. DCR-HC48, a miniDV vcam, must be iLink or FIREWIRE400**-connected to pc to upload video thru video capture or video editing* software while vcam is ON PLAYBACK.  Note: DV or Firewire port of vcam is 4pin. Before cable purchase** (Vcam/4pin=>firewireCABLE=>PC (4/ 6pin?), check pc for DV or firewire port, whether 4 or 6 pin. If none, install firewire card: pci for pc or pcmcia for laptop.

    for starters, free Windows Movie Maker* (XP-wmm2 & Vista-wmm6) provides simple & easy way to learn the ropes < click help for details>. Upgrade to intermediate video editing applications accdg. to need & skill level

          video editing process- XP/wmm2

          >>> open wmm- start/all programs/wmm->TASK pane

    1. Capture video stream** - editing software remotely controls vcam operations

    2. Edit- drag/drop video files->timeline & enhance w/effects, transition, music & titles

    3. Finish (render)- save Movie –OK for youTube, also save Project.msmmw file

          >>> Share-burn to CD (if DvD, use DvD authoring app, e.g.,DvD Flick, Nero, etc.)

    Similarly: Vista/wmm6- Import/ Edit/ Publish=>auto-shifts to WindowsDvD authoring app->burn to DvD

  2. TiddiVisual is correct... the only thing missing is that your computer needs a firewire400 port, too - a USB-firewire converter cable will not work. If your computer has an available PCI slot or PCMCIA slot, they are easy to add - and are inexpensive.
