Will an insurance company insure me if I am already six weeks into my pregnancy?

Our family is covered under my husband's UHC insurance plan. However, he's thinking of changing jobs before the baby is born. Will a new company insure me if I'm pregnant before we've signed on with them?

I'm afraid we'd have to have been covered by an insurance plan for a certain amount of time before they'd cover a pregnancy, true or not?

  1. You'll need to check on the rules in your state. Some states allow pregnancy to be ruled as a "pre-existing condition" and some do not.

(Insurance companies are always trying to get things ruled as pre-existing because it means they don't have to pay...).

Not sure about the amount of time needed on a new plan before you're covered.

You may want to try your state's department of insurance. You *might* even need to see an attorney about this one. Insurance law is complicated, to say the very least.

Good luck with your Pregnancy! :D

  2. By law, no group policy can include pregnancy as a pre-existing condition. Your pregnancy with a group will be covered as soon as you get on the plan. However, some companies will have a waiting period for the employee before they and their family can be covered. This waiting period can be anywhere from 1 to 6 months. If you are unable to get on the group plan you will be unable to get an individual policy because no insurance company will write an individual policy on someone, not even the father, who is pregnant.

  3. Zarnev is correct. You may need to pay for COBRA to get you through the waiting period and you can get on the new employer group.
