Question:

Will an old phone work on my telephone exchange?

I am considering purchasing an old telephone - complete with rotary dial. The seller says it has had the modern BT plug fitted and works using a legacy method called 'pulse dialing.'

Will this type of telephone work with my local exchange, which incidentally is digital?

  1. Yeah, it will. I have friends who have one of those old analogue phones with the rotary dialler. I think they are great. They look really stylish in the right home.

  2. contact your service provider and ask them to upgrade your local ATE to strowger equipment.

  3. yes it will, old phone how bad is that though your kids will be so embarrassed

  4. It should do have you asked if you can try it before you buy.Good Luck

  5. It will indeed work, but not on systems that require Dual Tone dialling ( where you are asked to press 1 for sales, 2 for customer service, etc) as the system is looking for DTMF tones from a modern phone. DTMF means Dual Tone Multi Frequency ( or a two tone sound unique for each number dialled) and the old style is Pulse Dialling, where each number dialled sends a series of clicks.

  6. Sure it will, BT still support both types of dialling, pulse and tone, so no issues other than the length of time to dial a number with "9"'s or "0" in it!

And the ring ring on some of them can wake the dead!

    Hope this helps?

  7. pulse dial means it  clicks when you dial, tone means it beeps. yes it will! work, all exchanges support pulse or tone dial, all it is, is that an old phone converted with new plug, means that you can connect it to a standard phone socket.

  8. call your local phone company ans ask is pulse dialing is stil available whee you live, if it is yes you can if it is only touch tone you can't
