Question:

Will an optician tint the lens blue for me?

I have recently discovered the benefit of using blue tinted lenses while reading. To test whether it could help me (I have long since suspected I have Dyslexia and have heard it can help) I ordered some costume glasses which had blue lenses. I found the extra colour to be fantastic for me when reading but they look awful to wear in public.

If I bought some frames with plain, non-prescription lenses, is it likely that an optician would be able to tint them blue or is this something which only specialists can do? The alternative would be to tint them myself using blue ink but obviously I would prefer to get a professional!!

  1. Sure, you can go into any optical shop, pick out a nice frame and have non-prescription lenses made with blue tint.

If you are talking about buying a dept store type pair and then having those existing lenses tinted, then it is unlikely, as the lenses are not the same quality as prescription lens material. They could be ruined in the process.

  2. any optician should be able to do this for you if they have a tint unit in their shop.  if not they could send them to the lab that normally does their work.  it will cost around $10.  forget doing it yourself.  the dye has to be hot in oder to be smooth.
