Question:

Will an" Ethernet to USB" adaptor allow me to set up a wireless router?

I am hoping to get xbox live for my 360, but my computer is dated to say the least, and i have noticed that it does not have an Ethernet port on it.

I was wondering if i would be able to connect a wireless router to my Computer without the use of an ethernet port, as mine doesnt appear to have one.

Thanks in advance to any and all answers!

  1. Windows ME, 98, and 95 do not like wireless.  Check this out: http://www.cnet.com/4520-7390_1-6274537-...

  2. that link above will probably give you a virus.

if your computer does have usb ports then an ethernet to usb should work perfectly.

are you getting a wifi usb stick as well? beause the pc will need to get it's internet from somewhere, if you get this, the ethernet to usb will work with windows internet connection sharing (ICS)

otherwise, why not just connect the xbox to the router with an ethernet cable?  this should work all automatically, zero configuration

  3. The usb adaptor will add an ethernet port to your PC. Connect an Ethernet cable to the adaptor and the router and you should then be able to configure the router.

  4. Your computer doesn't have LAN on-board therefor forget about an Internet connection, your computer can only install hardware with a CD whatever

  5. It will probably work.

If you want to be sure, purchase a pci Ethernet card and put it in the pc in a now idle slot and you will have a built in Ethernet port.

Many older pcs use the original USB version, USB 1 which was problematic and not dependable enough to do the needed job.

I would prefer to use an Ethernet card.

Cost wise, you will likely find the Ethernet card less expensive as well.  Install is very easy but you do need to open the case.

  6. no i dont think so
