We need a new DVD player and we have a non-HDTV, but might upgrade to HDTV in the future. Would an upconvert DVD player work on our tv until we decide to upgrade?

  1. On a non HD tv, you will get either 480i or 480p resolution.  You will get 480i resolution if you use either Composite (yellow video) or S-Video.  You will get 480p resolution if you use Component (red, green & blue video).  If your computer does have Component video, then you will have to go into the menu of the DVD player and turn on Progressive Scan or there might be a button on the front of the DVD player depending on what brand of upconversion DVD player you go with.

  2. the function of an upconvert dvd player is to upconvert the signal to a higher resolution like HD, by using a non-hd tv you will be getting the same resolution as a regular dvd player. any dvd will work if the tv have rca video input in the back like composite, s-video or component, if not you will need an rf modulator.

  3. Yes the only aspect is you will not be geting the fullunconverting abikities of the unit because of the capabilites of the TV.  If you do upgrade to hdtv get yourself a BLUray.

  4. Absolutely. The only difference is you will set the output of the player to 480i or 480p(depending on the capabilities of your current display) instead of 720p or 1080i/p.

480i will likely be the default setting the player ships with.
