Will antibiotics take the pain away from an abcessed tooth?

I have an abcessed tooth and it is beyond painful and my cheek is swollen. The dentist said he was going to call in antibiotics. But will they help take away the pain and swelling?

I have been on antibiotics for over 48 hours for tooth abscess but pain is still there, should the antib's have stopped the pain by now?
