Obviously, there are technological advancements that must be made. It takes a launch pad, a team of scientists, powerful rockets, etc. We can take off from the moon, but taking off from Mars should be more difficult than lifting off from Earth.

  1. Yes.

But why should be taking off from Mars be harder than from Earth?  There's still considerably less gravity.  They'll need a more robust liftoff engine than the one used to take off from the Moon, but that's only a question of mass and propellant (and it may be possible to manufacture the propellant on-site.  At least one missions scenario plans to do that.)

  2. In a way it will be harder to lift off of Mars. Here on Earth we need more fuel to get a ship into space because of the higher gravity but on Mars we won't have an army of engineers to help out except only in giving advice over a drastic time delay.

It has been said we are more ready to go to Mars now than we were ready to go to the moon during the Apollo program. I think Zubrin's plan is pretty cool. The Semi Direct plan consists of a ERV (Earth Return Problem), a Habitat, and a launch vehicle that uses a nuclear generator to turn the Martian atmosphere into fuel being sent to Mars then several years later the crew goes to Mars for a year... its all pretty well laid out. There are several engineering hurtles, but nothing that was more troublesome than what NASA faced during the Apollo program.

  3. Yes. I ill bet anything in the next 90 years there will be a man landing on mars. Remember the name MATTHEW WALTERS because it will be him landing on mars ( thats me!! :D )

  4. My honest opinion is no. NASA still has to get back to the moon before going to Mars, and there is still so much work left to do and learn from on the moon.

once considering to go to mars, scientists will have to design and contstantly test and retest their designs. this inlucudes sending the actual rockets to mars, testting them and restesting them before finally sending the corrected final versio nto their
