Question:

Will any old satellite box work as a digital converter box?

I understand that this may be a stupid question, but I wanted to be sure. I have an Echostar 4700 Satellite Tuner I bought at a thrift store for $5. It has a coaxial cable/antannae input and a tv output. Can I just hook everything up and be done, or is there more to it than that? I'm doing this in preparation for the digital transition (I currently have basic cable).

Thanks.

  1. NO. the satellite box is looking for satellite frequencies and the NTSC to ATSC converter is looking at terestial broadcast channels.

  2. well NO it will not work

your satelite receiver is different from a digital converter box the change will not affect u if u have cable already but if you want apply for a ntia cupon and get a free digital converter box visit this two sites

  3. No I don't think that will work.  Also, since you have basic cable the digital transition will not affect you.  Only people who get their TV signal via an antenna will be affected.  Those are the people who need the new DTV boxes that are being advertised.

  4. I'm sorry, but they are tow different things.  The satellite receiver is for satellites.  The converter box is for over the air TV.  One will not work in place of the other.
