Now that Walmart and others have decided to go the Blue Ray route, what will happen to all of us with the old DVD players? Will we be able to purchase movies that play on them in the future? Also will my computer be able to use the new format to burn discs of my movies and photos?

  1. There's already players that can play both.....they're called Blu-Ray players. There will never be a standard dvd player that can play Blu-Ray discs...if there were, they wouldn't be standard dvd players anymore.

Blu-Ray disc burners for the computer already exist.

  2. All your regular DVD's will play in a Blu-Ray player, in fact they will look even better than they do when played on a regular DVD player. But it will not work the other way around, you can not play Blu-Ray disc on a DVD player.

As for your computer it may take a little more time before Blu-Ray is common drive for computers. They are in the works but still pretty pricey. Once they become widely available it will be great for storing movies and photos on, a Blu-Ray disc has a capacity of 25GB and dual layers discs 50GB. Opposed to DVD's 4.7GB

  3. The new players are backward compatible and they do the up-resing for standard DVDs. So standard DVDs are supposed to look better. You would have to have a Blue-ray drive in your computer to play blue-ray discs on you computer. You can also buy a blue-ray burner for your computer, but both the unit and the discs are expensive. Hope this Helps.
