Question:

Will anyone have access to my stuff?

I'm going away to school and giving my dad my old laptop. I have all my stuff on here, photos from certain parties i wouldn't want him to see, private conversations, and other various items. I set his account to limited, made my files private, and put a password on my account. Any way he can still see my files? He's not too computer savvy but still.

  1. If you saved all your documents within your profiles MyDocuments, and he is not set to Admin then he shouldn't be able to. The fact you said he was not computer savvy, i wouldn't worry about it.

  2. if you are saving items that are not suitable to be viewed by people publicly...you should know better...delete them...even if your dad doesn't know how to get to password protected files a hacker can pretty much do that very easily...your files should either be too sparse or too many for someone to ignore

saving private conversations...hmmm...what about yahoo answers...do u copy and save that also? wait ...don't answer that...have fun at college

  3. Yeah, I'd back them up and delete them. The problem with giving him a limited account is that it is extremely (overly) limited. So, basically, he'll end up calling you any time he wants to install something and asking you how he can, since his limited account won't let him. Then you'll have to give him your password so that he can log in as you and actually install the software. Then you have a problem again.

So, to repeat, backup and delete. It's the best option, because then you don't have to worry about it.

  4. He should not be able to access the files given the configuration you describe.  But, ask yourself this question.  If he has trouble with the computer, and takes into some computer place they will be able to access your files given enough time.  Then the next thing you know - your infamous party videos are posted all over youtube - delete the files and let him have the laptop.

  5. If I were you I'd just burn everything onto CD/DVD and then delete my account off the computer.
