Will asking to change my hours change the way my boss perceives me and my commitment to my career?

There is yoga class that I really like to take that goes from 5:30 to 7:00. The next class isn’t until 6:30 and doesn’t get out till 8:00, it’s just too late. I get off of work at 5:00 and I hate having to rush.

I was considering asking my boss if I could come in a ½ hour earlier and leave at 4:30 from now on. He's really flexible so I know he would say yes, but would it change the way he perceives me? Will it make me look irresponsible or less committed? It’s not like its school or something that will benefit my work, but it’s not like I’m asking for the time off either. I plan to come in a half hour early to make up the time. So how would you respond if you were the boss?

  1. I value work/life balance as an employee, and my manager does as well. If your boss is flexible, perhaps he would actually be impressed at your effort to balance your work/life activities.

It sounds like you've been proactive in addressing the situation, planning to come in 1/2 hour early to make up the time. I'd say go ahead and suggest it. Taking care of personal health is a big deal in today's world, much more so than when every job was tied to a time clock.

    Namaste

  2. If I were your boss I would let you but also ask you to go back to your normal hours when your class is completed.

A little thank you gift to your boss would be nice after you complete your class.
