Question:

Will attending a 3rd/4th tier undergrad school preclude me from acceptance to top law schools?

Obviously, coming from a better ranked undergrad school will be better, but is coming from a 3rd tier university going to be overwhelmingly crippling when it comes time to apply for law schools?

The alternative is to transfer into a higher ranked university but I have already transfered a few times after sub par performance my first year and that too is surely frowned upon.

  1. no.

  2. if you have been having trouble your first year, then the main thing you want to focus on if you want to get in to law school is keeping your grades up.  The university you do your undergrad at shouldn't be a huge problem if you are trying to get into law school.  From everything I've heard, flourishing at a smaller name school is better than floundering at a bigger name when it comes to getting into graduate school.  I think you will find the most help in this matter if you talk to your professors.  They will be able to give you good advice about getting into law school, and when the time comes for you to apply, they will be able to write letters of recommendations for you which can be a big help.

If you're concerned about transferring several times, it is certainly less common but i think that grad schools will look at your grades and your lsats before they look at that.

  3. Unfortunately this is pretty much the way it is. If you come from a 3rd/4th tier undergrad school then you are going to need a high GPA (3.7+) and an above average LSAT score (175+) to stand a chance of going to a top 50 or even a top 100 law school (1st tier).

In saying that it is not impossible. I do have a friend who went to the Community College of Denver and then transfered to the Metropolitan State College of Denver who ended up at the University of Denver's Sturm College of Law with myself.
