We will stay at a hotel in Mestre for one night. Leave our luggage and get the train (or bus? not sure) to cross the bridge. Can anybody tell me what we should do after that, get a vaporetto? To where? What are the main places we should see in a day?

  1. Venice is a walking city so be prepared to hike it around especially as the vaporetto is expensive and only goes up and down the grand canal.

The main areas are San Marco and Rialto but the Guggenheim is in Dorsoduro and the Accadmia Gallery is just in from of the Accademia Bridge. To get a real flavour of Venice, I would also try and explore areas such as San Polo which have some wonderful churches, small piazzas and cheap trattorias.

If you have time for another night, I stayed at a cheap apartment with these guys http://www.holiday-velvet.com/venice It's a beautiful city but having a day will only give you the taste for more.

  2. Usually, the train to Venice is a shuttle.  You cannot get the sleeping train all the way to Venice.  Leave your luggage at the hotel because the gondolas can get crowded.  Get a map at the first stop after the bridge.  There are two popular stops to get off.  Do your research first.  The restaurants in the side streets or at the back of a main road are cheaper and usually operated by families.  There is a distinct difference between the food prepared by small family restaurants and the boardwalk portals.  Since you only have one day it does not matter.

    Boaz.

  3. the only place that you HAVE to see is the piazza san marco. its just beautiful. otherwise, walking around venice is good enough really...the architecture is amazing and you dont need to go anywhere specific....you just need to walk!
