I've had a few fish die and now that there all gone, my husband cleaned out the fish tank and with everything in it with bleach. But now we can't get rid of the smell. Will the bleach smell kill fish?? or should we do anything else?

  1. yes, bleach kills!

you need to rinse everything over and over until the smell has gone, and leave it to dry, preferably in the sunlight. even then there may still be a risk it's tainted.

bleach and indeed any disinfectant is lethal to fish and other tank organisms (such as all the good bacteria that lives in the filter).

  2. rinse, rinse, rinse and rinse some more and it should be ok.

  3. Even city water contains some form of bleach and chlorine.  Rinse the tank and everything in it well.  Go to your local pet store and buy some chlorine remover.  Let it sit for a day and then buy some more fish.

You also need to change the filters in your tank.

  4. Yes for sure.

rinse and repeat till the smell is gone. If bleach in in the filters, then throw them out.

  5. You have to rinse very, very well with warm water.

  6. Yes,

You should try to find fish disinfect in a Pet shop, and use that on the tank if should kill most of the bleach or at less help but if the smell is still there I wouldn't get more fish.

  7.   Chlorine bleach is chlorine, the same as what is used to treat tap water.  How do you remove chlorine from tap water?  Dechlorinator.

Fill the tank, add about 5 times the suggested dose of dechlorinator.  Let it sit for a day or two, and drain.  Let it dry, use double the dechlorinator when you fill it for use with fish.

There are so many misconceptions about the use of bleach in aquatics, mainly from folks with no hands on experience who just assume.  Bleach is a standard consumable in many fishrooms, including mine.  Once you understand how it works, and how to work with it, it is no more problem than working with chlorinated tap water.

  8. Yes, bleach will definitely kill the fish.

  9. why did you use bleach don't you know that there are some chemicals which are like poison to the fish !!!

  10. Fill your tank with water, let it sit overnight, empty it.

Fill it with water again, add twice the normal dose of dechlorinator and let it sit for 24 hours.

    Empty the tank again.

Rinse it over and over until it smell is gone [if it's still there].

Porous decorations, filters, and air stones need to be replaced as it might still hold bleach that would re-contaminate the tank.
