Question:

Will boxing damage my brain?

I'm 50 years old and thinking about joining a boxing group.

Just some sparring matches with all the protective gear including head gears. Of course, I'll be boxing with someone of my similar age and ability.

Could it damage my brain?

  1. yeah. most boxers have their brains all shook up. Think about it. Hitting your head is the most dangerous thing that can happen to you.

I'd avoid it and get into other sports.

  2. owee

  3. Not if you keep your hand up and cover up.  Head gear is always a good idea for armature fighters.

But than again if you are thinking about entering the fight game at age 50 "YOU ALREADY HAVE BRAIN DAMAGE".

  4. Its very unlikely if your only doing sparring matches and its not like the other guy will go all out on you, its only sparring, so the chances are low. Im 17 and i spar and im not brain damaged so you should be fine, not being offensive but take it easy considering your age and if your only JUST beginning boxing. Good luck friend.

  5. Sparring with other 50 years olds, you should be fine. You guys wont be able to hit as hard or as fast as pro fighters. I say props for wanting to keep in shape and spar at 50 years old.

I dont know of any reported cases of brain damage in the amateurs, usually guys with 30 odd fights who took allot of shots end up with brain damage.

Guys like Floyd Mayweather, Leonard these type of fighters are usually fine because they don't take tremendous head shots and dont get hit allot.

You should be totally safe so gave have fun.

    Salute.

  6. If you are wearing headgear and fighting other guys who are "older" you will probably be fine.

But, getting hit in the head isn't always a good thing.

  7. Headgear protects you from superficial wounds only. You receive the same concussive impact as you would without wearing it. In fact, there has been some speculation that wearing headgear is actually potentially more dangerous in terms of severe concussive trauma.

That said, if you're only doing some light sparring, I doubt you'll have anything to worry about.
