Question:

Will bug spray harm my outdoor flowers?

I had a cricket in a flowerbox next to my bedroom last night and I sprayed (and sprayed) a can of Raid Ant & Roach Killer on it to kill the cricket (I couldn't find it in it, but it was definitely there). The cricket is apparently dead (it stopped singing), but I was curious if it would harm my snapdragons.

  1. Crickets are good luck. I don't think they harm flowers anyway. Why kill it?

As for OTHER, harmful bugs, try neem oil next time. You can get it at garden centers. It will get rid of the bugs without harming your plants.

  2. It is possible that using Raid could harm your plant as this product was not designed for use on plants. Next time, it would be better to use a product that is labeled for use on plants. There is a wide selection of products available at your local garden center or at Lowe's, Home Depot, or Wal-Mart. Whenever you use pesticide products it is important to read and follow the use directions.

  3. Was it worth inhaling all that chemical to go after one cricket?  Yes, it was bothersome, but isn't your health worth more than being bothered?

As to the flowers, I worry about the propellant more than the chemical, but even then an excess can burn foliage and flowers.  Long term problem? probably not.

If you are that sensitive to noise, get foam earplugs.  They are cheaper and less heath damaging....and great when sleeping partners start to snore.
