Question:

Will bullets explode in hot weather?

I will be buying a revolver for concealed carry, and I plan on carrying it in my vehicle as well. Well, here in Texas, it can reach 100 degrees in the summer, and inside a parked car, I'm sure it's closer to 130-140.

If I leave my firearm in the glovebox when I park my car, can the hot weather cause the bullets to fire? I know about primer and firing pins and what not, but it seems to me that hot temperatures like that could potentially be dangerous.

Advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

  1. You'd have to heat a cartridge a lot hotter than 140 to create an explosion. Constant exposure to those high temperatures might eventually cause some deterioration in the powder, but no explosion.
