  1. maybe you are mixing 2 different things hd sound is not the same as HDTV, HD sound as Dolby trueHD and DTS-hd  are new audio codecs found in new HD movies format like blu-ray and HD-DVD , hd-tv is a television capable of displaying hd video content. And for $40 dont expect too much power from the system.  If is the one with integrated dvd you can get 5.1 out of the box if not you have to hook up a digital audio cable optical or coaxial thats depend on the dvd player to the durabrand digital audio optical or coaxial input.  But really save your money at least to a $170 and upgrade to a better one.

  2. If you want to have HD sound, whatever equipment you are buying to need to look for the HD Logos, that certifies that the sound system can play sound in HD. You will need a HD TV because it has the inputs for HD sound.

  3. Dolby 5.1 is only available using the OPTICAL cable connections on the DVD players and Cable boxes...that's the only way to get Surround sound to your amplifier....

The TV's surround cable isn't the same as Dolby 5.1...it's just plain old surround that's not even 5 channel like Dolby 5.1 is....

  4. Bad news buddy. Only newer TV's offer audio output to send the sound from your TV through your home theater system. If you want to watch TV in 5.1 sound you better make sure your TV has audio output.

Also you might want to spend a little more on the sound system. You can get an excellent Sony HTIB (home theater in a box) for a little more than $100. Its worth the investment.
