Question:

Will cancelling my union membership affect my employment?

I am employed in a grocery store in a "right to work" state, Virginia. I've been there almost a year and am a union member. I want to cancel my membership because the union really hasn't done anything for me and it's money out of my pocket every month. Besides, I'm represented by the union whether I'm a member or not. Someone told me it's very difficult to get out of the union. Anyone have experience with this or any advice?

  1. If your store has a "closed shop" you can be asked to leave.  "Closed shop" indicates you must pay union dues & join the union to work there.  You do not have to go to meeting or be active, just pay the dues.  If it is not a "closed shop" and since you are in a right to work state you could have a good law suit.  As long as you are not fired for just cause.  Unions are NOT required to represent non members.  Getting out can be as simple as saying "I quit the union".   If you later have a grievance you may have someone from the union with you but do not expect a really good fight from them as you are no longer a dues paying member.  Check the "Right to Representation" clause of your union handbook.
