Small pond approximately 1 meter x 1 meter, only 2 fish that were quite happy in their own little environment. Now being shared by numerous cane toads. I keep removing them and they keep reappearing!

First, will it harm the poor fish (goldfish) and second, how do I get rid of them for good?

Thanks guys

  1. yep... get them out and quick especially if they breed tadpoles... mmm

    they killed my fish....lol

  2. rebe-- Bufo marinus, imported from Africa to eat insects (and rats) in the sugar cane fields but they "got away". ? 1 meter X 1 meter X what?.If the pool is 1 ft. or more deep; no they probably won't hurt. What the toads want is to wet their skin, grab a few insects as snacks, and lay their eggs. Large masses of eggs might be a problem. If the goldfish are large they may snack on some toad eggs. The toads urine and skin are poisonous (watch a dog or cat after they grab one).

The parotid glands (big swollen spots between the eyes and ear membrane) are very poisonous and hallucinogenic. Their milky exudate is one of the reasons why they were ingredients in witch's brew.

Try putting a chicken wire fence, about 1 foot high, around the pond area. That should stop most of them.  michael

  3. Ugly little critter those cane toads, and yes they can harm your fish.

I think its because the cane toad spawn is toxic to fish, when they eat them. Plus the cane toad has voracious appetite, and will eat small fish.

I am not sure how to get ride of them, I'd be rich if I did.

Black wed mat around the house fences, or pond will help, also having lots of plants around the pond may deter the cane toad.

    Edit

To kill them humanely you place them in a bag and freeze them for 24 hours
