  1. If anyone has the upper hand on it,it is Cliff Lee's to win.He is an awesome hurler

  2. Hey ASG: In case you didn't know Cliff Lee is leading the Majors in ERA.  Even better than Justin Duchscherer.

Lee has an excellent chance of winning the Cy Young award this year.  The one thing he has going against him is that his team is not in contention.  One of the things the voters take into consideration is how their team is doing.  Of course that applies more for the MVP award than it does for the Cy Young.  For Lee to win it he has to keep pitching well and be able to hold off his competitors which include Daisuke Matsuzaka, Mike Mussina and Sauners, Santana and Rodriguez of the Angels.

If Lee would end up 22-3 you'd have to give the award to him.  The amazing thing is in his 5 no decisions this year, the bullpen failed to hold the lead 3 times and the two other games he left in the 8th with the score 1 to 1 and the 9th with the score 0 to 0.  With a little run support and bullpen help he could be 21-2 right now!

  3. he is the front runner for it..the only other contenders are Joe Saunders and Mike Mussina really, and Lee stands out way ahead of those guys

  4. YES. CLIFF LEE ALL THE WAY!!!!!!

  5. i dont think so.

its hard to say. you could be going by record but in my opinion ERA is the best stat to determine a pitchers effectiveness throughout the season.

i thikn they might give it to Francisco Rodriguez. But id like them to give it to Justin Duchscherer of the A's

  6. Roy Halladay will have a shot at it too, but Lee is the frontrunner at this point.

  7. maybe him or webb

  8. looks like it 4 sure.  if he doesnt i'll b mad

  9. yes he will. He is 16-2 with a win last night. He is 16-2 with not a good team. I think Mike Mussina will come in 2nd but Lee will win by a landslide.

  10. if he keeps on pace of what he is currently doing then i think so ya

he was the first to win 15 games

    i gave you the star

  11. I say YES

  12. yes he will by a landslide over mike mussina to be 16-2 with that bad of a team you have to be a great pitcher

  13. its definately looking that way.

  14. Wow...lots of Yankee Fans jumping on Mussina's bandwagon.  Typical Yankee fans, don't know much about baseball.

There are 10 starting pitchers in the AL that are on pace to win at least 13 games (which is the minimum any pitcher has ever won a Cy Young with) and that have an ERA under 3.66 (the highest that any Cy winner has ever had).  They are: Justin Duchscherer, Armando Galarraga, Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Jon Lester, Daisuke Matusaka, Mike Mussina, Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders, and James Shields.

Cliff Lee is hands down the favorite right now, but he's got to keep pitching the way he has been all season.  If he gets hurt or has a couple bad starts, he might lose out.  But he has a winning percentage that is an insane .441 better than his team.  The next best among those 10 is Dice-K with .299.

Roy Halladay is the clear runner-up at this point, with the same caveat that he stay healthy and continue to pitch well.  His record isn't great, but a lot of that is run support.  He is 1st in K's, 3rd in ERA, and 2nd in WHIP among that group.  His 7 CG's is far and away the most.  But his lackluster offensive support means that he's got to pitch a CG shutout to win more times than not.  His record means he won't win it, but his stats say he'll finish 2nd.

K-Rod is having a great season, but I don't think closers in the modern era should win the award.  Somone that gives you 80 IP doesn't have the same impact as someone who gives you 220 IP.  However, many voters disagree with me, so I'm sure he'll be top 3.  Might even win it, but I doubt it.  He's got a lot of saves, but his numbers across the board aren't dominant, just very good for a closer.  For guys with 20+ saves right now (there are 21), he is 9th in ERA,  12th in WHIP, 7th in strikeouts and has the 3rd HIGHEST number of walks, even though he's 7th in innings pitched.  Like I said, he's good, but not dominant.  He just happens to be on a team that has a lot more save situations than any other in baseball this year, and he's converted almost all of them.  He does have 4 blown saves, so he's not perfect, and he's actually on pace to only pitch about 68 innings.

For all you Yankee fans out there screaming for Mussina, among the 10 guys I mentioned, he is 7th in K's, 8th in ERA, 8th in WHIP, DEAD LAST in BAA, and his .148 winning percentage differential is good for only 4th.  His 7 losses is the 2nd most in that group, and he is also one of only 3 guys in that group to NOT have a complete game under their belt this season.  Sorry, but he is NOT a Cy Young candidate this year.

So Cliff Lee wins it, Roy Halladay is the runner up, and K-Rod steals third because he breaks the saves record.  Right now, I'd say Dice-K finishes right behind that group because he's putting up some great numbers considering he missed 3 or 4 starts with an injury and has pitched extremely well lately, allowing 2 or fewer runs in 7 of his last 8 starts.

  15. Probably not because his team is so terrible.

  16. He probably will, but I think K-Rod deserves it personally. He's about to break Thigpen's record, and he will only keep going. That's pretty monumental. The saves in a season award broken in the season, and he doesn't get awarded for it? That'd be a travesty in my mind, but Lee will probably get it.

  17. He's 16-2 with a 2.45 era and you think somebody is going to say no he isn't???
