Cold fusion is an example of pathological science.

Even your story - which never happened but is a myth - is an example of it.

Two scientists reported an experiment in a newpaper rather than a journal and without peer review. Noone was ever able to repeat it. But politicians, the public and some other scientists found its promise so attractive that they abandonned reason and poured millions of dollars into fruitless research.

Nay sayers were debunked (I was one of them). But they were right. Cold fusion does not exist.

If such an explosion took place the scientist was not conducting cold fusion experiments. You are probably remembering the incident in The Manhattan Project, when a burst of neutrons delivered a lethal dose of radioactivity to one of the scientists.
