Question:

Will college location affect career opportunities?

I am looking for a college with a great English program because I plan on writing for a publishing house or magazine. I have picked out Syracuse, Boston University, and Emerson as my top choices. My dad however refuses to send me there because of his separation anxiety..and the cost. He has shot down every school I have picked and has told me his is picking for me. He has his mind set on Florida State University for SOME reason (even though I hate florida and the school). I feel like I should be going to a school where I will be getting a job (if i do)..aka New York or Boston. Won't going to a school down south or anywhere else give me less opportunities and prospects? I have worked so hard to go to the school that I want, and now I don't even have a say so in it. English is a pretty impractical major anyways, and I don't want my college to affect any chance that I have in a job.

(does anyone know any great undergrad english colleges that are less than 30,000 a year?)

  1. English majoring is a BS major. Minor in it instead if you have to or you will wind up uneployed, no girlfriend/ dumpy car and cheap apt working at ikea or starbucks (for the benefits lol).

Move away from home so you can focus on your studies and life.  I wish I had done the same.  Go to a high rated college and forget what your parents say unless they have been to college themselves.  Also go the college that gives you decent funding, grants scholarship etc and apply to at least 10 or more colleges.  Do research and find the best, highest rated and then apply to it based on your chances of getting into it with your GPA and SAT's.

    Also choose a realistic major.

    Do not major in:

    Art hist.

    eng lit.

    dance

    art

    music

    film

    graphic design

    psychology

    sociology

    to name a few...

Be realistic about your future job and potential career.  Better colleges have better advantages.

    Good luck.

  2. I am not sure of any other good non-southern universities since I am a girl from the south, but I completely encourage you to go against your dads wishes and attend the university you feel you will be happiest at.  It is the MOST important aspect of your college education, to be somewhere where you are happy and feel there is opportunity to you-what motivation, focus, and drive you will have living in the city or near the cities you could possibly start your career.  Plus like you said, if you have the grades to get accepted into your top three dream schools-don't let money or parental influence your goal-yes your parents are a huge part in choosing your college experience but they will eventually support your decision and be overjoyed when they see how much you are going to grow and succeed in an environment you want to be in! Also don't let finances be an issue- apply for every scholarship you can and get stanford loans-no one can take away your education so go get it :) good luck, hope this helped
