  1. Yes component will work on SD TV's. In fact it's the preferred connection.

In order of best-worst connector type, to get the best picture quality relating to connector types. (depending on what your equipment supports).

HDMI- Digital. Single connector; audio and video. Supports up to 1080p.

Component- Analog.Three separate cables. Supports up to 1080p, (with good quality cable).

S-video - Analog. Supports standard def video. (What differentiates S-Video from these higher component video schemes is that S-Video carries the color information and luminance as separate signals).

Composite- Analog. Standard Def. All video signals are combined into one cable.

  2. Component splits the signal into three parts which, without going into detail, allow a sharper picture with better colour than with composite or S-video.

You can recognize the connection on most home entertainment devices as three RCA jacks (coded red, blue and green). Using it  requires a three cable connection ... sold in stores as three cables bundled together with  red, blue and green RCA jacks on each end.

If your TV has an component input, and you have a source device (e.g. DVD player, cable box, game system, satellite receiver) with a component output you can use it. Your picture will improve. If your TV doesn't have the connections you are out of luck.

Note that most older TVs must be "told" to activate the component input --- it's a setting in one of the menus.

    Hope that answers your question.
