Question:

Will cutting a PVC pipe using a saw intended for wood damage it (the saw)?

If this isn't a good way to cut PVC pipe, tell me what other viable options I have. I would like to not have to buy anything extra and I'm not doing this for home improvement either. I'm trying to cut 3.75 inch pieces of PVC pipe that's three quarters in diameter out of a 15 inch piece.

  1. A handsaw will work well, but a hacksaw would do even better. No it will not harm either any more than cutting wood.

  2. You can use a hacksaw but the blade tends to travel if it isn't tightly fit.  A regular backsaw or crosscut saw will be difficult and dangerous to use.  Here's what I would do:  If the PVC pipe is less than 1.5", buy a PVC cutting "scissor" that makes clean cuts.  Once you're done with it, you can either keep it, or return it to the store--but I kept mine because I had other plumbing needs.  The store might cut it for you too, perhaps for a small fee.

  3. I would only use it as a last resort, you really need to buy a hacksaw ( you can purchase all types of blades for your hacksaw from metal to wood, many types to choose from !)

The cutting teeth on a regular handsaw are mainly designed for man made lumber! examples: 2 by 4's 4 by 4's etc. It is possible, you may damage the teeth on a great hand saw, how ever,,It will work ! If you use it be sure (coz you will have a very rough cut ) oil up your handsaw, afterwards,wd 40,liquid wrench Etc.! Make sure you hand sand the pvc around the rough edges inside of it & out also be sure your cut is straight before you sand, hand saws will easy cut pvc sideways or on an angle! (tip) Make your mark all the way around the pvc, this will help you stay on a straight cut !

Make sure to check for rough edges, then when you are ready to glue be sure to buy cleaner prep for pvc and apply, this helps insure of no grits or dust etc.& will make the pvc glue work much better,it's similar to painting primer, you want a good clean surface & prep work,so you do not have to redo it!

Hope this helps! P.s.,IF you have serrated kitchen (ginsu)knives, they work in a pinch & work better than the hand saw,the larger sizes,I.E carving knives etc.,please be careful

  4. The answer to your question is NO.. it will not hurt the saw blade.

But... it is not the best tool for cutting PVC.  As others describe, there are too;s made just for cutting PVC pipe, but they are expensive unless you intend to use it for many cuts.  For one or two cuts the hacksaw is okay, but making a square cut is a bit tricky and is important if you are joining pieces together with cement joints.

For your project a miter saw or a chop saw would give you the best results.

    GOOD LUCK!!!

  5. go get a cheap hack saw that will work fine.

  6. Use a hack saw to cut the PVC and then sand the rough edges before fitting the pieces together. This is better than a wood rip or crosscut saw because of the size of the teeth.

  7. I use a hand saw to cut ABS and PVC pipe regularly. It is fast and does not harm the saw. Hacksaw for smaller and even a reciprocating Sawzall for precutting many pieces.

  8. No. Your pipe will be a lot rougher than if you use the right blade. go for it, it will work and not mess up your saw or the blade.
