Will cutting the sharp points off a cactus needle inhibit the growth of the cactus?

I have some cactus that I want to do some experimental grafting with. I'm very green pardon the pun. Anyway it would be nice if I could remove the hurty parts lol, I just don't want to harm the plant.

  1. I doubt cutting off the browned spikes would cause any problem. They're basically dead wood and just there as natural protection for the plant. It would be similar to cutting your finger nails.
