  1. With any luck, yes it will. While it doesn't have the raw abuse potential that codeine has, there's a growing trend of people using DXM for a hallucinogenic experience, especially young people who have trouble acquiring anything else. And honestly, this drug doesn't look to pretty long term. There's fairly consistent reports from treatment centers and substance abuse programs of memory problems and cognitive deficits among people who come in with frequent DXM abuse.

    I'd like to see the drug taken behind the counter, and an ID required to purchase, much like what has happened to psuedoephedrine. Anything beyond that is probably unwarranted, as we have no other good cough suppressant. Unlike psuedoephedrine, where the problem is it's conversion to methamphetamine, DXM's abusers are usually under the age of 18, once again making the point that kids will try to get high off anything. Such procedures would make it a lot harder for the substance to get into the hands of the people who will abuse it.
