We have a 75 Gal marine aquarium with a 3 damsels of different types, and a Tang. If we add a few other assorted Damsels will they school, or do they need to be the same type to get this behavior? Also any suggestions for other schooling marine fish would be fantastic. Thanks!

  1. i dont know if you will have room for these, but they usually start out really small.  You can look into fuislers.  I am getting about 5 of them for my 125, southern fuilser.  They look really cool, and grow about a foot long.  They are a really neat schooling fish.

  2. Um....that is Effie.....Damsels with similar body types and colors will relate to each other, they are not really schooling fish but aggression seems to be cut in half when you have odd numbers, I would not put 2 4 stripes in with 2 yellow tail damsels, or anything non aggressive after you add a fish like the 4 stripes, anything I have added since the 4 stripes (as in smaller fish) the 4 stripes has killed, I have lost 1 4 stripe 1 domino and 2 yellow tails to my bigger 4 stripes, so I would suggest 7-9-11 yellow tails or 3 dominos and 3-5 yellow tails, stay away from the jeweled damsels they are MEAN, chromis are nice if you want a more peaceful tank, there is nothing that comes to mind in marine schooling fish for a home tank, other then a few sharks, but yes your damsels should be the same kind if you only have 3.

  3. Chromis (damsel family) will school.  I have read reports about different chromis schooling together but I personally only have green chromis which are the most common species.

  4. ours don't school...they actually have a kind of sibling relationship...they chase each other often.

  5. Most in a tank will not school, and they don't need to.  Some like the domino's will work together to eliminate a threat or to keep other fish from foods.  Tangs will school however most saltwater tanked fish really won't.  They have no need to.  Fish school for a few reasons and the main one being protection from preaditors.  Since they are in a tank they soon realize there is no threat.  Clowns won't school either.  The Alpha male and female will remain together while others go on their merry way.

In a salt tank, very few will school
